It is very nice to be back home, but at the same time I miss being in NY and being at the office so very much.

It is still difficult to try to digest my experience in NY, but one thing I can say is that I am very glad that I took this opportunity because now I have better understanding about what relationships with other people mean to me. First of all, my experience in NY was possible only because I had understsanding and financial support from Jake, my parents, and Jake's parents. And there were sincere friends who helped me to keep on going toward my goal to successfully finish this internship, and there were many great people I met while I was in NY. I feel like, after all, we could only learn to become a better person through interactions with other people.

So, as I close this blog, I would like to thank everyone who supported me to make this happen. This is the blurb I wrote. If you click the title, it will jump to the documents I wrote. I really love these pictures because they tell us that each older persons are very unique and each of them have really come through a lot. I hope you will be able to see them.

Japan: Sketches of Aging: Photographs of Older Persons by Munesuke Yamamoto (August 2006)
Each older person has a unique life history that he or she has come though. After having taking numerous pictures in war zones all across the world, freelance photographer, Munesuke Yamamoto, focuses on a new subject. His camera looks at older persons between 70 and 100 years old and, and through pictures, Mr. Yamamoto aims to capture each older person as an individual with various emotions such as delight, anger, and sorrow. Grateful for Mr. Yamamoto’s cooperation and permission, Global Action on Aging introduces some of his photos reflecting the lives of Japanese older adults who are living full lives despite physical limitations or their harsh past experiences in wars.

Girlie Girl's Talk

So I guess I broke my record of not updating my blog. I did not realize that it had been almost 2 weeks since the last time. I'm not even going to try to make any excuses though.

I have been doing good here in NY. It's hard to believe that I only have one week left before I go back to Michigan. Looking back, one thing I enjoyed the most here was having "girl's talk" with my new friends.

At the office, there were 5 other girls around my age. They are kind of people who are very smart and aspiring, and also very cute.

Often during lunch, they liked to talk about dating and men. In fact, I cannot think any other time in my life when I had this kind of talk with friends this intensively. Their topic varied from "hating a guy who wears white socks with sandals" to "this guy I met at a club on saturday night" to "why you should only marry a doctor or a lawyer" to "marrying a price in Dubai."

At times, talking about men was overshelming to me because I am not interested in dating scene any more, and of course I know that I won't be able to talk about this topic forever because it could be shallow and superficial. But still, I have to say that it was kind of fun to listen to them and to bash men together. I could feel that this is how women unite.

Frustration

So I have been working on this paper "Old Age Poverty and the Role of Social Pensions in Developing Countries" for a while now. It is due on the 15th, it and actually is very close to the end. But I feel like this "almost over" time is the hardest time because it is so frustrating. It is a 25 pages minimum assignment, and I already have 24 pages, so I am not worried about the lenghts any more, but I just cannot finish it. I feel like I still have so much more I have to write!

I am going to meet Jake in Pittsburgh, PA next weekend to celebrate my birthday together. We are planning to go to wineries in the area for me to get drunk and forget about my age. Getting excited about this trip makes me even more frustrated because I really have to finish this paper before I go. Yes, I need to scream.

Questions...

This evening on the way back home, I was on the train as usual and was reading on a seat. Then, at one point I heard someone making noise with some coins in a cup. So I glanced at the direction the noise was coming from, and there was a man on a wheelchair with both legs amputated .

Then, when the train stopped at the next station, he moved with his wheelchair, stopped right in front of me and shook his cup looking at me. I have to admit that I really did not do what to do. I froze. All I could do was to stare at my book as if he did not exist. I could feel my face and ears turning bright red.

I could have opened my purse and gave him some money, but I could not do it. I could have looked at him and treated him as a person, but I could not do it either. I was not prepared for this at all. After a short while, which seemed like an hour to me, the train stopped at a station again and he moved to a different spot.

So I borrow huge amount of money from my parents, and go to the "No.1" school of Social Work in the nation. But what is that for? If I was a potential one of the best social worker, why couldn't I do anything or say anyting to him? Or am I thinking too much of myself and social workers? But at the same time, what would skilled social workers do in a situation like this? Would they tell him about all the social services he could use instead of begging for money on trains? Or would they do what I did?

I feel that his way of asking for money was kind of rude, because he was invading other people's spaces way too much and also I know that even social workers cannot be responsible for all the misfortunes that's happening around the world. But still I feel like I could have done something else, though I do not know what it was. What would you do have done if you were me?

Weekend Trip

Went to see my friend in MA over the weekend. Here they have something similar to a buffet. From things like salad, vegetables, college-dorm food, by which I mean m&c, Chinese, mashed potatoes, chicken, fruits, you pick what you want and pay by weight. At different counters they have sushi or sandwitches as well.

So everyday for lunch, I go to one of the closest deli from my office with other girls. When I first came to NY, I was so excited about this system because I had never seen anything like this. But after 2 and half months, I have to say that I am getting tired of it. I am tired of eating pasta and avocado for lunch everyday.

However, I have to admit that this is not only deli's fault. The thing is, I eat the same thing for dinner everyday too, except when I eat out. I have been addicted to Natto Udon (fermented soybeans and noodles) with okura. I actually have a history of eating this almost everyday for a whole summer 3 years ago. It is so good.

But anyway, eating only same things for both lunch and dinner is kind of boring even if they are good. I actually just realized that I have been eating the same cereal for breakfast everyday too. What is wrong with me? I need some creativity.

Cute Baby

A while ago, I sent a package of baby stuff to my friend in Japan who had a baby in May.

Today she sent me pictures of the baby wearing the clothes I sent and surrounded by the things I sent. I was wondering why but I have decided that it's probably because of too much temperature difference between inside and outside. Sometimes it can be unbelievably hot and humid outside, but once I am in the office or in any buildings, it's usually freezing. Having been used to cooler summer in Northern Japan, I guess my body has not learnt how to deal with it.

4th of July

Yesterday was the 4th of July, Independence Day in the U.S. A big day to see fire works. Although I am so scared of small fireworks that you hold in your hand (in Japan, you can buy fireworks at all kinds of stores and you can do it on a street, or at a park, or anywhere), because I am so afraid that I might get burned, I love the big ones.

So last night I went to see the fireworks with some girls from work. We were so lucky to see them up close from the UN garden. Strangely, while I was watching the fireworks, I thought about my family in Japan a lot. I think it was last summer, but my parents, my sister, and I went to see fireworks to a nearby town. Because there was no wind, all the smokes from fireworks got stuck in the sky and it ended up to be a sucky evening, I remember about the night so clearly. And I just wonder if there would be another time I can go see fireworks with my parents in Japan again. I don't like to be independent, but alone.

My Weekend

So I was back in Michigan for a few days over the weekend and it was so much fun. It felt so good to be back home although it was a very busy trip (Im not sure if it is right to call Michigan "my home", but at least my real apartment and all of my crap are there). And of course it was great to see Jake and see him making funny faces again.

On Sunday, Jake and I attended our friends' wedding. It was very nice. Their parents and family members were there from Japan, and they must be so proud of the couple who did a wonderful job (of course, especially the bride). And it was also good because both Jake and I drunk only moderately. We avoided making fool of ourselves. I have to talk about food again, but at the wedding they had the best yogurt as a side for fruits. It was so creamy and sweet, but not too sweet and was just perfect. So now I have a new mission for my life, which is to to look for this yogurt at a store.

On Monday, we saw Jake's parents from Wisconsin. They are on a vacation trip and doing a road trip. In the evening, we went to a swimming pool and a hot tub at a place Jake's parents were staying , and it was very nice to be in a hot water seeing pretty orange sky. Made me want to go back to Japan so bad to go to all the cool natural spas.

Celebrity

Yesterday was a lucky day for our office. For example this afternoon, all that was in my head was Camembert cheese. Hmmmm, Camembert and red wine.....I think I am being like this because I am at the middle point of my summer internship here. It has been almost 2 months since I came, and I have about 2 months left. I am going to go back to Michigan this weekend to attend a friend's wedding, and maybe it will be a good time to reset my mind again.

Bye Bye Window

On Sunday, my land load installed an air conditioner to my room and to everyone else's room on the third floor. To receive 3 credits, I have to write at least 25 pages paper by mid August. I have never writen this long paper, and it is kind of scary because I have only finished 2 pages so far.To keep myself motivated, I am going to write a little bit about my paper today.

The title of my paper is "Social Pension for Older Adults in Developing Countries as Human Rights". We tend to assume that population aging is a trend only seen in developed countries because it is caused by falling fertility and mortality rates, which are supported by improved technology, public health, science and medicine.

However, despite this assumption, currently, 2/3 of overall world's older adults live in developing countries. By 2025, the ratio is going up to 70% and to 80% by 2050. This demographic change in developing countries is caused by 1) improvements in sanitation, housing, nutrition, and medical innovations including new vaccines and the discovery of anti-biotics, and 2) falling fertility rates due to implementation of effective contraceptive methods and improvements in women's education.

One thing that is significantly different between aging developed countries and aging developing countries is the fact that developed countries first became rich and then old, compared to developing countries that is becoming old before it becomes rich. As a result, many older adults are living in severe poverty and insecurity. As an effective intervention, what has been a hot topic in many developing countries is the social pension.....

Well, for those who find this absolutely boring, I am going to stop writing about this now. But please wish my luck to finish the paper by deadline.

Guest in the City II

So here is what I have to say about the days I spent with Jake.

First of all, it was so nice to see him again after a month and half. Although we had a few fights, we spent really good time together. And I have to say that what helped us to have a good time together was good food. I know I am probably sounding like a big-time pig but I think it's true.

We had the best Thai (at least I think it's the best in the world), good sushi, good watermelon shake, good rice pudding, good Vietnamese curry, good beer and Grapefruit chu-hi (Japanese drink). And Jake, who usually have to feel like he is a savage person next to me, civilized vegitallian, had lots of (actually, only two) good hot dogs at Coney Island.

When you are having good food, you are automatically happy and if you are having that good food with someone you love, your happiness is doubled. So yes, I was really really happy while he was here. Maybe I felt happy even more because I usually I only eat sad food like ramen and macaroni & cheese for dinner alone (I am trying to make an excuse for our extravaganza).

Guest in the City

LIke I wrote last time, Jake has been visiting me. So I asked him to write something here..

"My time in NY is already up and the proverbial time really proverbially flew. I have to say that I have a new found respect for NYC. The New York that I grew up watching on TV (Law & Order, NYPD Blue, Kate & Alley!) was a far cry from the NY of today. The city has an indescribable vibe and energy that I found to be inspiring and refreshing. And although life seems a bit rushed, once the evening comes you see people slowing down and you get the feeling that people really know how to enjoy themselves here.

There were only a couple of downsides. First, the pollution was hard on me. My allergies have been bad ever since Japan and the dirt and smog here really killed my eyes and nose. Going down into the subways was the worst (though the subways themselves were surprisingly easy to navigate and convenient). Second, the isolation you experience despite being surrounded by thousands of people is jarring. I'm glad Sumiko was here to explore and enjoy the city with me, but a few times I was on my own and it could feel quite lonesome. The city is so vast and the buildings so huge that your entire perspective is filled by New York, almost as if the whole world begins and ends here.

But really those are small things and I'm sure if I had more time in the city to adjust I would fall fully in love with it. The best part of this trip has been to see Sumiko. I'm really proud of her accomplishments here and that she is pursuing her dreams. She inspires me to do more myself. Hopefully someday soon I can visit NY again and for much longer. I barely even scratched the surface. And who knows, it wouldn't take much twisting of my arm to consider living here.
Best experiences: Coney Island, Izakaya & Karaoke in Astor Place
Worst experiences: Pollution (BOOO!) & Stifling Heat"

I am very glad that he had good time here. I will wirte my version of our days togfether some other time.

I Have to Say This

Jake is coming tomorrow night. People are unbelievably enthusiastic about the games. Maybe I am missing out...

Anyway, on friday I went to the Columbia University area to attend a conference offered for social workers in the city. It's interesting how we receive different impressions about a place depending on our mood.

I visited this area 7 or 8 years ago to visit someone, who I did not like too much. And I hated the place. I thought it was way too dirty and noisy. It was then I decided I would never come back to New York. But yesterday, I fell in love with the area at the first sight. The apartments were charming, streets were clean, and it was not noisy at all. So after the conference I even visited the School of Social Work building at the Columbia University. And of course the staff were really nice and helpful.

It's possible to assume that maybe the area went under drastic physical renovation to make it look better. But I guess when you are in a good mood, things do look differently.

Stairs

Living in New York and taking subway is a battle with stairs everyday (or i guess it's the same for everyone who uses subway in other cities as well). Even when you are on an elevator, many people walk instead of just standing there.

Unfortunately to me, I am very scared of stairs. When I go down, I am always so afraid that I might fall. I am 'stair phobic' if there is such a word. It started after I fell and hit my tail bone so badly one time. Those were hard wood stairs and my butt hurt so bad for a while. Since then, I am completely traumatized.

Sometimes, I am so jealous of those people who can go down stairs so fast without seeing each step. Those are people who can get on a train that's about to leave, and I am kind of person who wait for the next train. But oh well, I guess there's not much I can do about it. So when you go down stairs and see a person who is very slow, please understand that there are people who are seriously afraid of stairs, and please try to be nice to us. Do not push, please.

Viva Japanese Food!

Last night, one of my house mates, who used to work at a sushi place in Japan, made sushi rolls for dinner. International government and NGO leaders gatherd to review progress about the targets set out in the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS.

Related to it, last Friday was a big day for our organization as well. With the HelpAge International, we hosted a round table conference on the topic of "role of old care givers for HIV/AIDS patients". We had speakers from the Thai government, UNICEF, Department of International Development in UK, and HelpAge International.

It is not a well-known fact, but around the world, especially in developing countries, 90% of HIV care is given at home, often by older women. Up to 2/3 of people living with HIV are taken care of by their parentrs in their 60s and 70s. In addition, up to 60% of orphaned children live with grand parents while their infetced parents are taken care of by grandparents and also after the parents die. So progress in tackling HIV/AIDS really depend on how these grandparents are taken care of by goverment and other social service agencies. Most of them are in poverty, and they have to face physical and psychological problems of their own as well.

But the reality is, their concerns and needs have been neglected as most HIV/AIDS interventions target children and youths. Most people auume that it is parents' job to take care of their sick children. But can you imagine how hard it must be to be old and extremely poor and still have to take care of dying child and small children? It must be emotionally, physically and financially draining.

So as the NGOs, our work is to highten awareness among people about this critical issue, and that was what the round table was about. I was told that the turn up was pretty good. But personally, I felt it was dissapointing that not too many UN or NGO workers are interested in this issue. But anyway, it was a really good experience to meet people who are working on this issue at the front line at different levels. And I think I am doing my small part here by talking about the issue on my blog.

An Incident I Witnessed Today

Today I was at this Japanese restaurant during lunch hour. I was sitting at a sushi counter, and then this American person( i think) came in to ask if he could use a bathroom. An older Japanese sushi chef who was working at the counter said he could. Then a young Japanese waitress came and asked the chef what the guy was doing. Right after finding out that the guy came in just to use a bathroom, the young waitress shouted at the guy who was already walking to the bathroom and told him that their bathroom was for customers only. Then the guy came back upset and asked the young one why two people were saying different things. The young one then pointed at the older one and said "he does not understand English".

I just could not believe how rude the young waitress was. So maybe he can speak English, and maybe the older chef really do not understand English well. But that does not mean a young one does has a right to embarrass the chef like that.

Sometimes I think about my English. I was lucky enough to spend enough time in the U.S to acquire some speaking skill. But I know by now that being able to pronounce well or to speak with little accent do not really mean much. It's great if I can do that, but what is more important is to have things to say. We should not judge people by only what's outside.

So, this young waitless really made me upset. But I can see how it is widespread in the whole American society. A good example is immigrants. Many immigrants in the U do not speak English or even if they do, they may have strong accents, which is often a target of joke. But inside, she/he may have great talents and skills that we cannot see. I feel like I am losing my point, but all I want to say is that people need to respect others more. Just because someone does not speak a foreign language well does not mean others can make him/her feel like they are worthless.

Hmmmm...hot

I meant to update this blog during the weekend, but I had been unable to. That is because it has been too hot here for me to be productive. Today's high was 87 and humidity was 84%. Without a fan in my room, I am beat. I know that complaining about it does not change anything, but this is unberable. To avoid further complaining, I am going to stop here. I did some cool things and hung out with interesting persons this weekend, but I will talk about those when I feel more energized. Hopefully it will cool down this week or my landroad will realize that his poor tenants need a fan in our rooms.

Something about me

I need to talk about Jake again. Today I received a package from him and it was full of goodies. These things in the pic are just two of them. Other than these, he sent me my favorite snacks, canned coffee, and magazines. Yes, he is such a sweet person. Thank you, Jake! I feel like I have another mom! (just kidding, it was really really nice of you to do this)

So, often in my life, I get inspirations. 90% of the things I have done so far are results of these inspirations. The reason I am in NY now is because I had an inspiration about this organization too. Sometimes I get this kind of inspiration when I meet new persons too. If there is something beween us, I can sense it and I am always right. Anyway, I had another spark in my head today. It happened when I was at work and typing something. I am not going to talk about this new-born idea yet, because it's still a tiny thing just in my head. But I think it's interesting that something like this happens to me out of nowhere. And why does it happen? Maybe I should get trained and become a psychic.

Espanor

Currently at the UN, they are having the "Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues". Everyday they host many conferences and side-events. For example yesterday, I joined a conference "Violence against Indigenous Women". They talked about how indigenous women of all age groups are suffering from various kinds of violence from men. It is absolutely horrible situation.
But anyway, I am not going to talk about the issue too much because I know too much about it. :P So related to the forum, today there was a craft shop by indigenous women in my office building. I went there with one of my coworker just to see what they got. Many women there did not speak English but talked to us in Spanish. It was then I realized that I can understand Spanish!! How cool. They did not say anything difficult, but only things like "do you speak Spanish?", "this is $3" or "it looks good on you". But it was still awesome that I could understand what they were saying and could even communicate with them. I guess my effort to listen to other people's conversations in Spanish on the subway is paying off.

So I bought this pretty scarf from one lady. Even though I knew that it was going to be 80's this week in NY, I was so determined to buy this because this is a symbol of my small accomplishment (by the way, that bear did not come with the scarf, just in case you are wondering).

Thank you note

Now that my sister is gone, my next visitor is going to be Jake. He is going come here in the middle of next month. I am so excited to show off my knowledge about the city to him.

But really, I cannot thank him enough for letting me be here this summer. Being separate is always harder for those who stay. If I was him, I am not sure if I could be strong enough to let him be away from me for months, although I would like to try my best. And also, I have to thank his family and my family too for giving me this opportunity. I am such a lucky person to be supported by understanding people.

So, until Jake comes and until I leave here at the end of August, I will have so much time at hand. So I am thinking to start something new. Maybe I can learn Spanish again or volunteer at homeless shelter. But first, I am going to have an interview for a volunteer position at a social service center for Japanese American older adults. If I can become a companion volunteer, that will be great. We will see how it goes.

Great fun in NY

Hard to believe that it has been already a week since the last time I uploaded. Like I said last time, my sister had been visiting me. She went back to Hawaii this afternoon. To me, it was nice to have her around this time because we got to explore the city together. To her, I might not had been good enough because I still don't know much about the city. In fact, we struggled with subway couple of times. But it's all good.

Anyway, we did some cool things together. And here are my top 5 highlights of the week.

To have the best Thai in the world.

To go to a jazz bar and listen to live jazz.

To go see the statue of liberty from the ferry.

To sleep on a comfy bed seeing my sister sleeping on the hard floor.

Just walking around the city with my sister not worrying about what I say might offend her.

It's not sad that my #1 was about having good food, or is it? This Thai restaurant, Royal Siam, was really really good. Actually before we went here, I was a little upset with my sister because she told me that she was taking me to a "all you can eat for $12.95" sushi place she saw when she was walking around by herself, but she did not remember where it was. So I went in to this restaurant without expecting anything good, but when I had their Tom Yum Kung, it was like a thunderstorm. Soooo good. So glad that we did not go to the sushi place because it can not be that good for that price. But I will recommend this place to anyone who will be in NY.

The second highlight, jazz baw was really cool too. My house mate told us abut this place. The name of the bar is "smalls" and it really is a tiny place. But the music they played was so powerful and amazing. It was my first live jazz experience and I think I will be going back there again.

About #3, I actually not a big fun of "the most famous sight seeing places". But this was nice because we could take ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island for free and it was nice enough to stay on a deck. Plus, we had these delicious Italian dessert that we got at Little Italy. We ate them while watching beautiful night view of Manhattan. Hmmm, yum.

About #3 and 4, I don't have much to say. It's just that I like to have a younger sister.

Here is what my sister had to say....(though my sister has been in the U.S for a while, she gave up on writing in English, so I translated what she wrote in Japanese).

I left for NY on the 12th, right after my finals and got here on the 13th. My first time in NY!!! I never thought I would have a chance to come to NY, so am so happy that I had a chance to do so.

And I love this city!! It's like 10 times bigger than Chicago. Everyday, I walked around for 5-7 hours and went to various places. This city is full of energy. It makes me think that I wanna start something new too. If I could live here, I think that positive energy would be good influence on me too. So I've decided that I will look for a job in NY too.

One of the nice thing about NY is that although rent is high, you can live much cheaper than in Hawaii. Food and other necessary stuff are much cheaper here. If you try to look for things that are inexpensive but still have good quality, you actually can find them, and that's really the greatest thing about this city.

I have to leave for Hawaii in 5 hours and I am hating it. I am going to miss NY so much and I wish I could stay here (but not in my sister's room because it's too small). Thinking about going back to real life gives me headache. But I am happy because I had so much fun here. It will be so cool if the next time I come back to NY will be the time when I move in to NY

<img width='1' height='1' We would love to share our stories about the exploration of the city, but both of us are too tired from so much walking. It was a typical Japanese restaurant you can find in any cities in the U.S. Since it was a lunch time and the place was packed, we had to sit at sushi counter table.

After we ordered some "authentic American" sushi,we were talking, and then my supervisor said "it's funny that at many Japanese restaurants you go in New York city, Latino people are now making sushi", or something like that. So I looked at sushi chefs over the counter, and it was true, all of three sushi chefs were Latinos. I did not notice them until this moment because of course, if you go to a Japanese restaurant, you would assume that sushi chefs are Japanese.

But anyway, I think it is so interesting that Latinos are going to take over sushi culture in big cities in the U.S. Real Japanese sushi lovers might not like this trend, but after all, this is New York city and this is the United States of America.

I've been reading many Japanese community papers here, and it seems like many Japanese restaurants are in need of sushi chefs. There are countless wanting ads in these papers for that job. I'm sure that Japanese sushi restaurant owners want to hire Japanese sushi chefs (or at least Asian) because they will make it look more "real". But if those Japanese people who come to New York city for "American Dream" do not want to do this kind of job for little money they make, someone has to do it instead. And as it can be seen at any corners in this country, those who do decide to do cheap jobs are immigrants or racial minorities (actually, is it still right to call Latinos/Latinas minority??).

I'm hoping that those Latino sushi chefs I saw today will make something out from their job so that they won't feel used by Japanese culture. Maybe someday we will be eating something like "buritto sushi" or "fajita rolls" (well obviously, i don't know much about Latin American foods :P ).

Cultural Night

Tonight I went to a concert at Carnegie Hall. Me and other girls I work with got free tickets from our supervisor's husband.

It was by Oratorio Society of New York. I had no idea what it was going to be like but it was actually very impressive. There was an orchestra, and beside them, there were 4 professional singers, and behind them, there was a chorus group of as many as 200 people (I counted). So when they　played and sang all together, it was very powerful and even moving. I am glad that I was given an opportunity to see anything like this.

So I've been thinking to write about what I do in NY for my internship. But it seems too difficult without understanding how UN system works and I am still not getting it entirely. So I still need some time to digest all the information I receive before I can pass you those information. But for now, you can check our website at www.globalaging.org

kick ball sunday

Yesterday, I went to Central Park to play kick ball. It was a game between us, Global Action on Aging team and Global Policy Forum team, which is another NGO that's in the same building with us. It was such a nice day and I enjoyed being under the sun (and having beer under the sun) so much. So nice to have a big park like this. I had bad stereotypes about central park, but I found that it was a beautiful park where all the generations can find something fun to do. I have to say that I am starting to fall in love with this city.

By the way, my food choice here is the same with what I had back in college dorm days. Lots of ramen noodles. I even bought 3 for 50 cents ramen noodles today(yeah, i know that it's pathetic). In fact I think it might be one of talent that I can eat the same food everyday. We will see how long I can stick to this.

Meeting a chariama

Today I went to have hair cut. Last time I had haircut was before Christmas, so it had been about 4 months. I am usually never happy after getting haircut, but today it was different. The hair stylist was a Japanese person and he was really good. So I named him "charisma". This word is often used in Japan to refer for great hair stylist. He is truly my charisma.

Then I walked around the neighborhood of East Village. This is one of the most popular area for young people and I can see why. There are so many hip, but not too fancy restaurants, coffee shops and other fun stores. Here I went to Trader Joe's, my favorite store that sells lots of organic and ethnic foods. And there was a loooong line that surrounded the entire store to go to a cashier. Luckily, I only had a few items, so I could be on an express line, but it was insane. It's strange that those New Yorkers who are always in ruch do not mind being on tthe line for an hour to get food. Anyway, I am very happy to get my favorite frozen mango.

For dinner, I went to an Indian restaurant in the neighborhood with my housemtes. This was a really famous restaurant that is often on guidebooks. Food was good and it was fun to get to know my housemates.

First Visitor

Last night I had my first visitor in the city, my good old friend Joy, her husband Jason and their little angel Aidan. (Joy: I was gonna put the happy family pic here, but decided not to because you never know who is online nowadays. So instead I am posting a pic of Aidan. He looks so cute).

Anyway, so I met them at this fancy hotel they were staying. It was on the 18th floor, and they had really cool view from the balcony. I could look into nearby fancy condoes. Joy and I made an agreement that when we find out how to become rich enough to own a condo in NY city, we will share the trick with each other. I cannot wait for her to find it so that I can become rich easy.

Then we went to a nice restaurant and I had the most expensive spaghetti in my life, although it was not my money (thanks Jason and Joy!) And the food there was actually very good. I've been saying this to many people, but when I have real job and real money, I will return all of favors I have received.

Like I have been writing here, there are so many people with money and fame in this city. But at the same time, there are so much of opposite as well. I have been here only for a week, but I have seen 3 older women begging for money on the street. It crushes my heart. I am working at UN and doing research on old poeple in the world, but I cannot even do anything for one old person in real life. Makes me wonder the meaning of what I am doing. I need to do something to make this a better world.

UN building tour

Today I went to have lunch at the UN cafeteria. You would imagine that all those UN staff must be so noble, polite and such humanitarians, but I found out that they are not that great. They are just like other people, pushing each other in lines and leaving their trays on a table after they finished. So it was not all that impressive. I think cafeteria manner should be one of the qualifications to be hired.

On another thing that was surprising was that at one part of the UN building, smoking is permitted. I heard that it is the only place you can smoke in the building in the entire New York city. That is because inside UN property does not belong to any country. So they don't care what other people say but they only follow their own rules. Yuck. But anyway, it is really interesting to see people from all over the world. It's really cool because I don't need to worry about my Japanese-English accent here!

Just a short note

I ususlly don't like to complain, but I am really exausted. And what does this picture have to do with my internship??

Actually, after an exciting but yet long day at the office, I got really tired and went to a nearby Chinese supermarket after I came back home to look for some comfort food. There I found this "Cheese Roll", and what a surpirse. There was a cheese stick in the bread. I had never seen anything like this and in fact it was very good. Yes, it was a real comfort.

So anyway, my first day went good. When I went to see the UN building yesterday, all the national flags were down but today they were all up and it was neat to see them. My office is in the building with other NGO offices and to me, it's really mind stimulating to see all those people who work for social justice at an international level. I hope to get that kind of career in the future too. The staff and other interns I work with at the agency seemed very nice and friendly, so I feel lucky. Tomorrow I am going to receive a pass to access all the UN buildings, so I will have to behave myself not to misuse them!

Walking around the city

My mission for today was to go see the UN building and I accomplished it without getting lost. I am so proud of myself. An office I am going to go is actually across from this main building. It is about 15 minutes walking from the Grand Central station. It will be a good excersise, though not as hardcore as hot-yoga I used to enjoy in Ann Arbor right before leaving.

My impression of the city was not as bad as I expected. When I came here almost 7 years ago, I thought it was too dirty, but not this time. It could be probably because I was walking around the fanciest area in the city. One thing that surprised me was that no pedestrian follows traffic light here. To me, it seems like they are asking for trouble. But I am a follower, so I will be doing the same thing soon.

Time to say Good-Bye

Today I had to say good-bye to Jake. Another summer for us to spend separately. I am going to miss him so much.
So after 2 flights and 1 missing bag, I have made it to NY city. The house I am going to live for 4 months is really clean and nice. My landlord seemed nice as well. And more than anything, this is a really interesting neighborhood. I walked around a little bit to buy some stuff and it seemed like there are Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian communities coexisting here. Huge difference from Ann Arbor, or any other places in the States I have lived before. It will be fun to get to know this neighborhood. Tomorrow, I am planing to take a train and go see the UN office so that I won't get lost on Monday, on my first day of work. But tonight, I need to go to bed now as I am really exausted.....Good night.

Still

I am still packing. Hope I will be ready by then.

So here it is.

So I have decided to make a blog to talk about my life in New York city this summer. I am going to write this in both Japanese and English to show off my cool billingual skill (actually, I am doing it so that both of my familes and both of my Japanese and non-Japanese friends can read it). I am deteremined to update this blog on a daily basis, but we will see how it goes....
